The Rainbow weighed in at 4.4 pounds. I use a digital measure and hook it into the net then deduct the weight of the net. BTW, I took home a 12 inch Perch. Delicious. When you are fishing these lakes that have invasive species (usually by thick headed bait fishers), you should take them out....all of them. MNR tells me that sunfish and perch drastically reduces the survival of newly stocked fish by eating all of their food as well as the stockers themselves.
But there are only a few weeks left. Pick your days if you can. We've been fishing a lake less than two hours from the Capital which has both Rainbows and Lake Trout and even a few Browns. Without revealing the location, MNR told me that they actually got a natural Splake in a sampling as the lake used to have Brook Trout. I got my first Lake Trout on a fly. At this time of year they are in shallow water. All of these fish were caught in less than 20 ft. The brookie below was caught recently at a nearby Brook Trout lake with an Dark Olive Coney Leech. The Coney has turned out to me my best producing fly. Tie a few.
