Got some time on my favorite small Brook Trout lake about an hour away from home. The Rainbow fishing on public water has been poor to lousy this year. Although it has occurred to me that I may have to change my modus in order to catch one. However this particular lake responds well with dry flies. Any dry fly I'm sure will do but my favorite is the Phentex Humpy. I think it represents a Boatman on the surface because of it's white back or rather a strong contrast between the top and bottom. Phentex also floats pretty good. I make them by the dozen. The yellow shows up better (to me) but I think the white ones fish better. I did miss one larger trout on my intermediate line with my version of Ian Colin James' Muncher. This is a second year fish. Glad to see some survived the ice fishing onslaught. They close the season on September 30th to protect the more aggressive males but open it on January 1st only to be slaughtered by ice fishers. There is very little O2 in these lakes during ice and become easy targets. Ice fishing should be banned on small lakes. I am going to try my best to get something done about it at the Advisory Council.
