Brookies in the Fall

This is the time of year when the male Brook Trout get their mating colours.  They are also pretty aggressive.  It is the reason they closed Z15 on September 30.  Unfortunately, with general water warming, there is little reproduction happening in lakes with the exception of a few close to Algonquin Park.

It seems wrong to me that they would close lakes to the benefit of ice fishermen at the disadvantage of soft water fishers.  Maybe I'll make a Constitutional challenge!

We don't get much trout fishing in the Fall as the water is hardly cold enough until the last two weeks for Catch and Release which is what all of us should be doing.   There are not enough fish in our lakes and streams to be harvesting them.   The remote lakes are hit hard by ice fishers in snowmobiles so there are very few lakes where fish will make it to their full potential.  The one above is likely three years old.  Fish raised in hatcheries rarely exceed five years of age.

Z18 has a few cold lakes where one can fish all year round.

Kenauk's Sugarbush has to be one of the best destinations in Canada if not the continent for excellent fishing and a great cabin.  You have the lake to yourself with your buddies.  In mid October I landed 27 rainbows like the one above in just one day.  I lost an equal number.
Best time to fish was just before dawn and right at sunset.
I have another favorite fly: the Minky.  It is tied a bit differently than the Coney Leech.
