Rainbow Action

We don't have the great trout lake fishing here in Ontario that people in B.C. and Manitoba have.  That is because the Ministry and public still think it is 1950 and that it is OK to take out all the fish that you catch (to your limit).  A more intelligent approach such as taken elsewhere is to severely limit the larger fish if not ban the taking  out of fish longer than 18".  We just lost our only large rainbow trout lake by such people.  We were catching 3 to 5 pounders last Fall and early this Spring.  Word got out and the lake is cleaned out.
However there is the odd lake here and there that can provide some decent trout fishing if one matches the gear accordingly.  At this lake, only 45 min from home, yielded 6 to the tube (I try not to net fish as it is easy to release the hook from a tube).  I also had 4 or 5 long and short line releases.
I'm using 3wt rods for fish under 2 pounds.  They offer a comp ramble sense of action with enough strength to get the fish in without tiring it too much.
My usual flies of Mrs Simpson and Orange Hammill's did not provide the same results as the PT Nymph or Half Back even though I'm not sure there are Mayflies in this lake but I think the small size and buginess of these two patterns are irresistible to trout.
This is a 2 or more year old Rainbow.  They don't get very large in this small lake. This is a lake that our club identified (actually me) as being a good flyfishing lake and we supplemented the stocking a few years back when we had a local hatchery.  The Ministry responded by stocking more fish after that (to their credit).

Just got back from my usual trip to Kenauk.  I only had one night this year but it was enough if you stay out on the water late and get up real early.  It is a bit early but Kenauk has changed its time frame for "High Season" when it costs more.

The Vampire Leech and Minky were the best flies on a #3 sink.  They seemed to be everywhere but there was more action down in the water column.  Fish were caught with chironomids and balanced leeches off of indicators.  That is too boring for me.

Got to my favorite Rainbow lake the other day.  It finally came back last Fall but unfortunately, the word has gotten out and the place is packed with Lunch Hook types with Fish Fried Brains.  Our stocked lakes do not have enough large fish to kill them.  It is basic arithmetic which these people don't seem to possess.

Even though they stock between 3000 and 5000 one year old trout every year, the vast majority don't survive a year.  They are probably eaten by other larger fish.

This one and another I caught were measured at 3 pounds.  I just lifted up the net with scale then deducted the net weight.  It would be 20-22 inches.

There is a survey you should take and let MNR know that you want  trophy fishing lakes or any other improvement.
